What is it like shooting an Ar-15 in a target contest?
I was the most dangerous person at the outdoor gun range.

It was my first time holding the AR-15 rifle, and I was in a June target competition at Anne Arundel Fish and Game in Annapolis.

The AR-15 is controversial — and popular. It’s lightweight, weather resistant and has a light recoil, said club members.

The rifle is also versatile in function (hunting, target shooting, home protection) and in look (you can mix and match parts), according to advocates.

But gun control activists say semiautomatic rifles like it are a threat to society and should not be used for recreation.
In 2013, Maryland’s legislature instituted stricter gun control laws — proposed by former Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley after 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut — that included bans on certain rifles, pistols and handguns.
